Examples, Good or Bad?

Paul knew that humans need someone to show them how to act right. He pleaded with the Corinthians to follow him as he followed Christ (1 Cor 11:1). The Philippian church was encouraged to join Paul in imitating and following those who were good examples (Philippians 3:17). The Hebrews writer recommended that his readers remember their leaders who taught them the word of God, and to consider the end of the way of their lives and to imitate them (Hebrews 13:7).

Do you have a person you try to be like? Its great when we have good examples to follow, but tragic when we follow bad examples. We must be careful to follow the right people who are doing the right things in the right way for the right reasons.

Heroes are wonderful when they are godly, illustrations of how we should live. I know many parents who have lamented a child followed a poor role model.

We are all warned to be careful of the way we live so we do not cause people to stumble into sin. “Give no offense to the Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God” (1 Cor 10:32). Instead try to live in a way that others are encouraged to live better (1 Cor 10:33).

Perhaps the greatest advice we could give to the world is “Do all things as if you are doing them for the Lord.” That would give other folk something to shoot for.

I pray that we watch carefully where we go and what we do so we can be good examples to everyone.
